Programme director

Dr M. (Marijke) de Valck

Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies. Her specialisations include film festivals, programming and curating, access and reuse, cinephilia, film distribution and television studies.

Academic staff 

Dr E.L. (Eef) Masson

Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Studies. Before entering academia, she worked in the collections department of a film archive. Her specialisations include film preservation and restoration, non-fiction and utility film, and the use of media for educational purposes.

Dr M.S. (Manon) Parry

Assistant Professor of Public History in the Department of Art, Religion and Culture. She specializes in the histories of medicine and disability, food and drink, popular culture, and activism. Over the past ten years, Dr. Parry has curated gallery and online exhibitions on a wide range of topics.

Dr A.B. (Alexandra) Schneider

Associate Professor in the Department of Mediastudies. Her specialisations include media archaeology, film history, home movies and world cinema.

Dr M.A.M.B. (Marie-Aude) Baronian

Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies. Her specialisations include film aesthetics, archive theory, genocide studies and theory of representation, memory and testimony.

Professional staff

Bas Agterberg

is Project Manager and Curator at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, where he coordinates media historical research and publications. Previously he worked as a lecturer (Utrecht University, Utrecht School of the Arts College) and in film production. He was involved in the foundation and development of the Louis Hartlooper Arthouse Complex in Utrecht.  

Dr G. (Giovanna) Fossati

is Head Curator at EYE Film Institute Netherlands (formerly known as Nederlands Filmmuseum). Her specialisations and research include theory of film archiving, digital film technology and restoration, and color in early cinema. She is author of the book From Grain to Pixel: The Archival Life of Film in Transition (Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2009).
In 2013 Fossati has been appointed professor of Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities. The part-time chair was made possible with the support of the EYE Film Institute Netherlands. Fossati will continue her research on the influence of digital technology on efforts to preserve, restore and provide access to film heritage, as well as the new role played by film archives and museums in this regard.

Mark-Paul Meyer

is Senior Curator at EYE Film Institute Netherlands (formerly known as Nederlands Filmmuseum) and co-editor of the book Restoration of Motion Picture Film (Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann, 2000). His specialisations and research include film restoration, silent cinema, experimental cinema and photography.

Gaby Wijers

is Director of LIMA. Former Head of Collections and Restoration at the Netherlands Institution of Media Art.

Affiliated Professors

Prof. T. (Thomas) Elsaesser

is the founder of the UvA's Professional Master in Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image. Since June 2008 he retired from his teaching position, however he continues to be associated with the Department of Media and Culture as Professor Emeritus. His specialisations include film theory, film genre, film history and new media history.

Prof. J.J. (Julia) Noordegraaf

is Professor of Cultural Heritage and Digital Culture in the Department of Media Studies. Her specialisations include the history and theory of museum presentation and visual culture.
