Educational background

I have a Bachelor’s in Conservation and Restoration from the National School of Conservation and Restoration in Mexico City.

Why Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image?

I’ve always considered preservation and presentation as two sides of the same coin, and therefore wanted to study both elements within a Master’s programme. After looking around for the right programme, I eventually came across the MA in Preservation and Presentation at the University of Amsterdam. Although there are similar programmes in the US and UK, the UvA seemed like the best choice.

Has the programme met your expectations?

It isn’t quite what I expected, but that’s not a bad thing. I initially imagined the programme to be purely dedicated to film, but soon came to realise that this wasn’t the case. Aside from film, the programme also incorporates other elements of audiovisual material. Although I wasn’t too happy about this at the start of the programme, I eventually came to appreciate this broad scope because it brings to life things and issues that I never imagined existed or had previously thought about – such as broadcasting – before starting with the programme.  One feature of the programme that I really like is the combination of film, broadcasting and media art.
Another aspect I’m pleased with are the lecturers, who are very accessible and knowledgeable about the subject matter. I know I can always approach them with any questions or issues I might have.

Any other projects / extracurricular activities?

Aside from the programme, which takes up a large chunk of my time, I also do volunteer work at the EYE Film Institute Netherlands. I also love going to the cinema whenever I get the chance.

What do you think about the UvA / Amsterdam?

I love Amsterdam. It is a perfect mix of small town charm and big city vibrancy. I have to admit that Amsterdam played a prominent part in my decision to study at the UvA.

As for the University of Amsterdam, I am really happy with my decision to study here, and have little to complain about. The only niggle would be the fact that – at least as far as my programme is concerned – we didn’t have a lot of contact with other disciplines. I would have loved to have the opportunity of taking classes in the Bungehuis or PC. Hoofthuis, both of which are stunning buildings.

Plans after graduating?

I plan to look for employment at film institutes, museums, etc.

Tips for new students?

Give it your all! The workload is quite high, which means you’ll need to work hard and participate in every facet of the programme. If you remember do so, everything else will fall into place.
