Profile

Dr. Hege Elisabeth Kjos is Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam. She is Deputy General Editor of Arbitration International (OUP) and serves on the Board of Editors of the Hague Yearbook of International Law (Brill), on the Board of Reporters for the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA), Center for American and International Law (country reporter for Norway), and on the Advisory Board of the Brill Research Perspectives: International Investment Law and Arbitration. Dr. Kjos assists in research for arbitrators and experts in investor-state arbitrations. She was previously employed at the Legal Department of the World Bank in Washington D.C.

Hege Elisabeth Kjos' courses and research at the University of Amsterdam focus on international law and international dispute settlement in general, and international investment law and arbitration in particular. She is also Acting Director of the Amsterdam International Law Clinic.  For a description of her courses, see next tab.   

Since January 2012, Dr. Kjos carries out postdoctoral research within the project 'International Law Through the Prism of National Courts: the Impact of Judicial Dialogue,' funded under the European Collaborative Research Project of the European Science Foundation. The Amsterdam Center for International Law collaborates in this project with the Universities of Berlin (Humboldt), Oslo, Vienna, Lodz, Siena, Salamanca, and Tel Aviv.    

She is a member of  the Research Project 'Interfaces Between International and National Legal Orders' and the Research Group 'International Economic Organizations' at the Amsterdam Center for International Law. She is also a member of the European Society of International Law and its interest group 'International Courts and Tribunals' and of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration, where she served as 'Buddy' in their Young ICCA  Mentoring Program (mentor Prof. Pierre Tercier).

Dr. Kjos holds a Juris Doctor degree, a Cand. Mag. degree, and a Bachelor of Arts degree following studies in the United States, the Netherlands, France, and Norway. In 2010 she defended her doctoral dissertation which formed part of the Pionier Project on 'Interactions Between International Law and National Law,' co-funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the University of Amsterdam.      

Hege Elisabeth Kjos is the author of the book Applicable Law in Investor-State Arbitration: The Interplay Between National and International Law, which was published by Oxford University Press in March 2013 as part of the series 'Oxford Monographs in International Law.' The book is also a freely available PDF Open Access book in the OAPEN Library, as a result of OUP’s participation in OAPEN (UK).
