International Development Studies (MSc)

The Master International Development Studies is organised by the Graduate School of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

The academic staff of this programme is actively involved in research; most of them at UvA's Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR); more in particular in the research group "Governance for Inclusive Development" (GID).

Jacobijn Olthoff

The Programme Director of the MSc in International Development Studies is Dr Jacobijn Olthoff.

Jacobijn Olthoff has a background in International Development Studies (MA - Radboud University Nijmegen) and Anthropology (PhD - Utrecht University), and extensive work and research experience in the Global South (e.g. Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Guatemala, India, Philippines and Georgia).

Her research and teaching interests include participatory processes in development, children and youth in urban areas, children’s rights and the work of NGOs related to children and youth in the Global South. Theoretically, her work is linked to interdisciplinary debates concerning socialisation of adolescents and youth, questions of agency and structure and more generally debates on childhood and children’s rights.

Niels Beerepoot

Niels Beerepoot 

Niels Beerepoot is the Fieldwork Coordinator of this Master's programme in International Development Studies.

He was trained at Utrecht University in International Economics and Economic Geography before he moved to the University of Amsterdam to pursue his PhD research. His research interests include small enterprise development, entrepreneurship, industrial clustering, innovation systems and labour markets.

Rivke Jaffe

Lecturer in the spotlight

Rivke Jaffe is an anthropologist whose research focuses on crime, security and citizenship. She has recently been awarded ERC and NWO research funding to study public-private security assemblages in Kingston, Jerusalem, Miami, Nairobi and Recife. She co-teaches the MSc IDS elective “Urban Inequalities”.
