‘Culture is everywhere, in all human societies, ranging from small groups to global networks. Through culture, humans give meaning to their lives and the world around them. Culture binds people together. But culture also separates people from one another.'
'In the Cultural Sociology programme, our researchers share their interests and insights so that students gain a deeper understanding of society by analysing culture. They will be examining culture in a broad sense, such as collective mentalities, ideologies, religious orientations, expert and lay knowledge, but students will also look at more specific features of culture, such as art, media, popular culture and even the human body. They will focus on how symbolic goods (like books and fashion) are produced, distributed and received.'
'In addition, students will explore how broader cultural conceptions are embedded in social relations, and how they change over time and vary across social groups.'
