Migration and Ethnic Studies is organised by the Graduate School of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

The academic staff of this programme is actively involved in research most of them at UvA's Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR).

Sébastien Chauvin

Dr Sébastien Chauvin is the Track Coordinator of Migration and Ethnic Studies.

Sébastien Chauvin is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam. From 2003 to 2006 he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago, and from 2006 to 2008 a lecturer at the Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne.

His research has dealt with labour, migration, gender, and sexuality issues, mostly in France and the United States. His dissertation was an in-depth participant ethnographic study of mostly undocumented Hispanic immigrant day laborers in Chicago, including the staffing industry that employed them, and the social movements in which they mobilized. It was awarded the EHESS best-dissertation award for 2007. In more recent years Chauvin completed a collective study exploring the labor-market experience and following the union-supported mobilization of undocumented immigrant workers in France.

His main research focuses on the relationship between precarious work, thewelfare state,and civic inequality in Europe. He also maintains a strong interest in gender and sexuality studies, social capital and the sociology of elites, social theory and the sociology of knowledge.
