The Master's programme Software Engineering is closely linked to the following research institutes:
- Informatics Institute (IvI, located in the UvA Faculty of Science)
- National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI, located next to the UvA Faculty of Science) - of which the Software Improvement Group is a leading research group that specialises in software technology for DSL development, and software analysis and transformation
- Information Management & Software Engineering department of the VU University Amsterdam.
