Exploring the universal properties of language

General linguistics is the study of the universal properties of language as they manifest themselves in the language system, the language capacity of individual language users, the use of language in varying social circumstances and the application of linguistic knowledge in technological environments.

The UvA has renowned specialists in all these areas and offers training through an integrated programme provided by the departments of Language Technology, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics and Language Pathology, Second Language Acquisition, Sign Linguistics and Theoretical Linguistics. 

Please note that this is not a programme in Applied Linguistics!

Degree certificate

General Linguistics is an accredited degree programme of Linguistics. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Linguistics and the title Master of Arts (MA).
