Disability or chronic illness

Studying and applying for jobs with a disability

If you have a disability or chronic condition, the UvA can provide extra support.

No barrier to study

Approximately nine per cent of UvA students have a disability or chronic condition. In general, a distinction can be made between physical and mental disabilities, dyslexia and chronic conditions.

A disability or chronic condition need not prevent you from graduating or finding a job. However, in some cases modifications may be necessary to allow you to complete the programme. The UvA offers financial support and additional counselling for those who need it.

Who should I speak to?

If you have a disability, chronic condition or dyslexia, we recommend that you contact the study adviser of your degree programme as soon as possible.

Your study adviser can refer you to a student counsellor if necessary, e.g. if you have financial concerns or require other support in cases of study delays. To speak to the student counsellor, please make an appointment via the Service & Information Centre.

Student psychologists and doctors

For psychological problems, please contact a student psychologist. You may also contact a student doctor if you have study-related health problems (such as RSI and stress).

Student Careers Centre

If you would like advice or support when looking for, or applying for, a job, please contact the Student Careers Centre. Special assistance is available for students with a disability.
