Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain. With education and research in mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, logic and computer science, we are fully immersed in the entire spectrum of the sciences.
Research at the Faculty of Science focuses on the major scientific challenges in modern society. Research institutes work together on leading multidisciplinary research themes. They forge connections with partners in society and industry.
The faculty is part of Amsterdam Science Park, one of the largest research areas in Europe. Our researchers are collaborating with colleagues of Nikhef, Amolf and CWI. Also, there are a lot of joint initiatives with the companies which are located on Amsterdam Science Park.
The value of our research is boosted by collaboration with application-oriented partners. The Faculty of Science is positioned at the beginning of the knowledge value chain. Through further development in society or industry our research has the potential to lead to innovation and new products.
The Faculty of Science has over 1,200 staff members. They are employed in teaching positions, research and support roles. The employees have a high degree of independence in their duties. There is a positive working atmosphere throughout. Regular meetings are organised to encourage the exchange of ideas.
Students at our faculty learn first-hand about the most recent research developments. They experience the expertise, enthusiasm and passion with which lecturers practise their discipline. Challenged to explore major scientific issues, they encourage lecturers to continually improve their teaching.
