PhD defence ceremony

Sanderien Verstappen researches forms of regional and community-based identity formation among the Vohra, a Muslim community in the Charotar region in central Gujarat (India). These include stories, marriage practices, investment in land, charitable associations and travel. The cultivation of their regional identity is placed in the light of the recent history of violence against Muslims in Gujarat and the wider marginalisation of Muslims in Indian society and politics.
