Here's why you want to study Earth Science at the UvA

Unique fieldwork

Obtain practical experience during fieldwork in mountain or lowland settings in Europe and/or South America

Interdisciplinary approach

Investigate the complex interaction between the Earth surface, ecology, hydrology, environmental chemistry and humans

Two tracks to specialise

Gain in-depth knowledge and skills in one of two tracks, Earth System Science or Environmental Management

Tight-knit, international setting

Study and work in an international environment, with a personal atmosphere and short lines of communication

New and state of the art facilities

E-science labs include GIS, remote sensing and geo-ecological modelling, soil- and environmental chemistry and erosion labs

Earth Sciences will suit you, if...

  1. You want to help advance fundamental knowledge on Earth System functioning and how these functions respond to human pressure.
  2. You want to solve complex issues dealing with sustainable development goals.
  3. You want to acquire in-depth knowledge on the functioning of the Earth System and its interaction with ecological and anthropogenic processes affecting life on our planet.
  4. You want to deepen your knowledge on managing geo-ecological systems in interdisciplinary teams.
  5. You are eager to learn using and applying state-of-the-art methods that include and integrate remote sensing, GIS and e-Science based techniques, advanced laboratory and field measurement techniques.

Choose your track

The Master’s Earth Sciences consists of two tracks: Environmental Management and Earth System Science. In both tracks, you will gain comprehensive knowledge and skill sets through coursework, lectures, fieldwork, laboratory work, and data analysis. You can read more about it on its dedicated page.

Research Departments

The Master's Earth Sciences benefits from scientific research and knowledge of experts in ecology and earth science from the departments of Ecology and Landscape Dynamics (ELD)  and Theoretical and Computational Ecology (TCE) at Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED).
