Frequently asked questions

Does my doctorate come under the old General Doctorate Regulations 2010 or the new Doctorate Regulations 2014?

The new Doctorate Regulations 2014 entered into force on 1 October 2014. Doctorates for which the dean signed the proposal for the composition of the doctorate committee before 1 October 2014 come under the old General Doctorate Regulations 2010. Doctorates for which the dean signed a proposal for the composition of the doctorate committee on or after 1 October 2014 come under the new doctorate regulations. If the request for admission was signed by the dean before 1 October 2014 the decision taken will be valid even if, in terms of content, it is contrary to the provisions of the new Doctorate Regulations. Any candidate who has a request for admission signed by the dean on or after 1 October 2014 will come under the new Doctorate Regulations 2014.

Is my exemption decision or admission decision still valid now that new regulations apply?

If the decision regarding admission and any previous decision regarding exemption were subject to the old regulations and were signed by the dean before 1 October 2014, they will be valid for an indefinite period.

Is my notification of appointment of the doctorate committee still valid now that new regulations apply?

Doctorates for which a proposal for the composition of the doctorate committee was signed by the dean before 1 October 2014 come under the old General Doctorate Regulations 2010. The old regulations stipulate that if the assessment of the doctoral thesis by this doctorate committee results in a rejection of the candidate's admission to the doctoral defence ceremony, the candidate must re-submit the thesis to the doctorate committee for assessment within a year of this rejection. If this deadline is exceeded or the doctorate committee rejects admission of the candidate to the doctoral defence ceremony for a second time, the appointment of the doctorate committee will lapse. If the appointment of the doctorate committee lapses and, subsequently, a new doctorate committee has to be appointed, the doctorate will come under the new Doctorate Regulations 2014, with the exception of the admission decision, which will remain in force. The new Doctorate Regulations 2014 state that the notification regarding the appointment of the doctorate committee will remain valid for one year and, subsequently, will automatically lapse.
