PhD procedure in the Netherlands: introduction
The Netherlands is one of the few countries in Europe, and the world, where PhD students are employees of the university. In most countries, they are treated as students, or have to pay for their time as PhD students through a scholarship.
There are PhD scholarships in the Netherlands too, but they are generally used to cover the costs of PhD student salaries. The primary task of PhD students is to conduct research, leading to a thesis. They must also attend and give lectures. At the start of the programme, the compulsory course elements are determined.
