Design of the Stapenning honorary medallion

The Stapenning honorary medallions are made of bronze. The face shows the University logo and its Latin name, Universitas Amstelodamensis. The garland around the medallion has, since 2001, shown seven books representing the seven faculties of the UvA. To show how closely interwoven the University and the city are, the reverse shows the logo of the city of Amsterdam, with the silhouette of an Amsterdam canalside house in the background. The University’s original name, Athenaeum Illustre, is also shown.
