UvA launches massive open online course (MOOC) on media ethics and policy

Does our changing media landscape necessitate new codes of conduct for media professionals? This is the central question of Media Ethics and Governance, a massive open online course (MOOC) that the University of Amsterdam (UvA) will be teaching on the Coursera education platform as from Thursday, 28 September. The course will be taught in English and offered free of charge worldwide.

Professionals who have to make ethical choices about communication in their work, such as journalists, media professionals and politicians, can learn how to handle ethical communications dilemmas in this course. Instead of establishing right and wrong, the MOOC focuses on developing ideas about media ethics. It questions influential theories and perspectives on ethics, traces society's changing requirements and expectations, and examines existing ethical standards for media professionals.

Own pace

Because the course is offered online through Coursera, participants can complete it at their own pace when it suits their schedule. The MOOC uses the same study materials as the Bachelor's programme in Communication Science at the UvA, with videos, quizzes and peer feedback assignments which enable participants to practise and test their knowledge immediately.

Interactive learning

The MOOC also allows for plenty of interaction among students and with the lecturer team, consisting of Rutger de Graaf, Damian Trilling, Lotte Salome, Sandra Jacobs and Annemarie van Oosten.

Best in Europe, second in the world

The online course Media Ethics and Governance is an initiative of the College of Communication and the Graduate School of Communication Science. The UvA's Communication Science programme enjoys a distinguished reputation, having been rated the best in Europe and second in the world by the QS World University Rankings. In 2013, the UvA launched Introduction to Communication Science as the world's first-ever MOOC in the study of communication. This course has since attracted over 150,000 visitors from more than 100 countries.
