Jumping to conclusions: about the (non-)linearity of language change

10Nov2017 15:15 - 16:30

Arjen Versloot is the guest speaker at this ACLC seminar for which MA students are especially invited. Title and abstract are now available.

There is in increasing interest among theoretical linguists to use diachronic or diatopic data to underpin typological implications from theoretical approaches to language. A prerequisite for such inferences is that language change is 'well-behaved' and that theoretically or logically likely orders of change are indeed reflected in the actually attested stages of languages. However, the paths of language change can be crooked and assuming linear developments can turn out to be a matter of jumping to conclusions.
