Studying Islam in contemporary society

The Master's in Islam in the Modern World provides advanced knowledge in the field of Islamic studies and insight into contemporary issues related to Islam. The programme a unique preparation for engaging with debates and policies concerning the processes defining the place of Muslims and Islam in modern societies, and is embedded in a broad range of research projects related to Islam in Europe, the historical tradition, reformism and modernity, as well as the history of Orientalism.

An integrated, interdisciplinary approach

The programme offers a two-pronged approach that integrates perspectives from the humanities and the social sciences. Students can specialise in historical, religious and political aspects of Islam, and focus on qualitative research concerning the position of Muslims in modern society. Both approaches will be connected in courses focusing on the relationship between historical, religious and social issues.

Degree certificate

Islam in the Modern World is an accredited degree programme of Theology and Religious Studies. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).
