Due to the ongoing housing crisis in the Netherlands, the UvA urges you not to come to Amsterdam for your studies unless you have secured proper housing. The UvA cannot facilitate housing for all incoming international students, and students are ultimately responsible for their own accommodation.

The UvA Student Housing Office helps international students in finding furnished accommodation for their first year of study. While the University of Amsterdam does not own these rooms, it collaborates with external housing providers like DUWO, De Key, and Student Experience to increase housing availability. Rooms are allocated through a randomized lottery system, and a positive lottery result is not guaranteed. You can stay for a fixed rental period (usually 1 or 2 semesters); early cancellation is only possible in exceptional cases. A one-year limit applies to ensure more students get access each year.

As students are ultimately responsible for arranging their own housing, the UvA Student Housing Office also offers practical tips, resources, and guidance on how and where to find housing independently, along with general information about the Dutch housing market.
