Communication Science: Research Master's (Applied)

Would you like to resolve communication challenges in practice rather than just study them? The Research Master’s (Applied track) in Communication Science is a two-year MSc degree programme for students who would like to be at the forefront of the newest developments in understanding the role of communication and media in an applied context.

The increasing pervasiveness of media and communication in our lives, forms many fascinating challenges. Older notions of media and communication need to be reassessed, the new media environment needs to be charted, and the consequences of the rapid changes in new media and digital technologies need to be understood. This forms the core of the Research Master’s programme in Communication Science.

Ambitious and personal

The Research Master’s in Communication Science is the flagship training programme of the Graduate School of Communication. It is an ambitious programme with courses taught in interactive groups. The Applied track enables you to connect communication science theories and rigorous research methods to communication practice, as well as gain professional research experience by pursuing an internship in a professional communication organization.

The curriculum allows you to pursue your own interests by specialising in, or combining courses from, one of our four domains: Corporate Communication, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication and Entertainment Communication, and cross-cutting topics such as digital analytics or political marketing. The approach is multidisciplinary: core theories and methods in communication science are combined with concepts from political science, sociology, psychology and economics.

In addition to theoretical modules, the Research Master’s offers you a wide selection of courses in empirical research methodologies, such as (automated) content analysis, social media analytics, experimentation, survey and qualitative analysis.

Hands-on research experience

As a Research Master’s student in the Applied track, you will take part in a communication consultancy module, developing skills to develop and pitch a communication proposal, understand stakeholders’ needs, and work through the case of an actual external client. Moreover, you will get hands-on experience by pursuing an extensive internship in a professional communication organization (e.g., media agencies, communication consultancies, etc.) and/or in the communication departments of organisations. Finally, you will write a research-based thesis, and design and execute a valorisation plan to make your results accessible to professionals. This creates a unique opportunity for you to translate the latest theoretical and methodological developments within Communication Science towards practical applications and professional settings, preparing you for strategic positions within the communication field.

Excellent career prospects

The Research Master's programme (Applied track) provides an excellent preparation for research and strategic positions at media corporations and production companies, marketing and advertising agencies, governmental organisations and consultancy businesses. Yet of course you can also put your expertise to use in the academic world, and the programme provides a solid background for a PhD in communication science.
