Towards the wise, compassionate, and just city
Breakthrough educational interventions transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth and (incarcerated) adults
Genuinely innovative (re-)educational programmes meant to help disadvantaged youth and (incarcerated) adults from high poverty urban neighborhoods remain scarce. The goal of this conference is to present the underlying visions and actual practical behind two bold interventions generating breakthroughs in the United States.
Concerns about socioeconomic cleavages and ethno-racialized (di)visions (related to radicalization) are on the rise in our cities. Thus the goal of this conference: to present the underlying visions and actual practical behind two bold interventions generating breakthroughs in the United States:
- Match-tutoring for inner-city students (Alan Safran and Antonio Gutierrez, SAGA Innovations, Boston), and
- GRIP: Guiding Rage Into Power (Jacques Verduin, Insight-Out, San Francisco), which aims to rehabilitate incarcerated adults.
Inside and outside the United States, interest is growing in these two approaches which have been carefully evaluated and refined for years. Bringing together for the first time these two sets of practices will hopefully lead to a fruitful cross-fertilization, a whole learning process that is more than the sum of its parts.
Participate in this conference
For policy makers, professionals, and social scientists alike, this conference will offer a unique chance to critically engage – with the founders and directors themselves – two truly innovative approaches to some of the most serious challenges facing urbanities today.

This one-day international conference is organized by the ADI (Adviesraad Diversiteit en Integratie, Gemeente Amsterdam) in partnership with the University of Amsterdam (Department of Sociology).
