1 November 2013: Adam Stockwell: ‘Head in the Clouds?'

The Amsterdam MBA program welcomed Adam Stockwell (MBA 2009) on Friday, November 1st, 2013 as the first ever Amsterdam MBA alum to speak in the Amsterdam MBA Leadership Speaker Series.

In an insightful and engaging talk, Adam Stockwell, Managing Director Europe of ECI Software Solutions, explained to the audience the significance of three interconnected data-related trends with profound impacts. First, the staggering amount of data generated and stored each year creates amazing opportunities for companies. At the same time, it means our conception of privacy and identity security are largely illusory, because “computers remember everything.” Second, the companies behind the collection and storage of this data are often unknown, but they are emerging powerhouses. Managing a gigabyte of data in a well-run company costs $6 a year while companies that run “the cloud” can do the same for pennies on the dollar. Third, demographic shifts mean that the talent market is increasingly mobile, and employees are gaining bargaining power as their loyalty declines. From “the rise of the Virtual Enterprise” to the “collapse of traditional mass markets,” Adam painted an exciting—if not slightly disturbing—picture of our lives on the “front line” of the digital revolution.
