31 January 2014: Joost Zuidberg: ‘Sustainable Development Finance in Frontier Markets: The Case of TCX Fund'
The Amsterdam MBA Leadership Speaker Series hosted Joost Zuidberg on Friday, January 31, 2014 on the topic of ‘Sustainable Development Finance in Frontier Markets: The Case of TCX Fund'
The Amsterdam MBA students spent a week in January at the University of Cape Town on the MBA programme’s annual International Study Trip. In South Africa, they learned a great many things about the challenges of doing business in an emerging market, and the challenges of using South Africa as a springboard for business in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. Joost Zuidberg’s presentation January 31st fit right in with this learning experience. One of the major risks of investing in sub-Saharan Africa relates to currency risks, especially in markets that lack liquidity and financial stability. TCX Fund hedges the currency and interest rate mismatch that is created in cross-border investments between international investors and local market participants in frontier markets. As becomes a CEO, Joost needed few words to make a passionate case for the opportunities in sustainable development finance. In a presentation that at times became dizzyingly technical, Joost spoke both about issues at the macro-economic level and about the strategy and performance of TCX Fund. In spite of the momentous challenges facing frontier markets, Joost exuded optimism about the opportunities and lauded the work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit of managers on the ground, trying to make things work in a very difficult environment.
