9 May 2014: Michiel Krol: ‘Serious Games'

The Amsterdam MBA Leadership Speaker Series hosted hosted Michiel Krol, Principal Consultant at PA consulting, on Friday, May 9, 2014 on the topic of ‘Serious Games'

In the last Leadership Speaker event of the 2013-14 academic year, Michiel engaged the group on why traditional teaching methods are no longer up to the task of keeping modern managers agile in a dynamic environment. Classical lectures lead to boredom and a lack of knowledge retention. What if there were new ways of learning in the business context that are both fun and more effective? According to Michiel, 'serious games' are the answer. Serious games are not play: they are simulations of real-world processes through which organizations and their managers can effect change. A serious game creates a different business environment in which it is safe to try new approaches, make mistakes, break through current thinking patterns, and experience the impact of behavioral change. Serious gaming can be used to simulate any number of dynamics, from the competitive environment to the organization’s strategy and even working in teams. By effecting behavioral change, boosting creative and strategic thinking, and enhancing awareness and learning, serious gaming can help sustain your competitive advantage
