'My time at the Amsterdam Business School in two words: challenging and rewarding'
Karla Flores Hurtado, Business Administration: Marketing
‘My decision to study Business Administration in Amsterdam was based mainly on the international prestige of the UvA and the quality of the programme. From examining the course catalogue I knew I would like it. I can describe my time at the Amsterdam Business School in two words: challenging and rewarding. Challenging because you are expected to prove yourself on a daily basis. And rewarding because after weeks of hard work you can definitely see your progress.
The programme has actually exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed how challenging it was and how I was expected to give the best of myself. The Dutch educational system is different from the Mexican one, here you are asked to give arguments that correctly form a foundation for your ideas, just showing you know the concept is not enough. This motivated me since I needed to break my old paradigms. The most rewarding moment for me was when I finished my thesis and got a good grade for it. The thesis is my special memory because I was given the freedom to write about two of my favourite topics: music and branding and furthermore I was able to contribute to marketing science with my thesis.
Another aspect I enjoyed a lot is the diversity of the students. Entering the faculty is already an experience, full of people from all the corners of the world and different backgrounds. It gives you the opportunity to interact with different cultures is another way to enrich yourself while doing your master. I enjoyed the lectures and workshops. Having super talented lecturers and being able to ask them any questions is such a great opportunity to enrich your education.
Amsterdam is a great city for students; it is vibrant, fun, cozy and cosmopolitan. Anything is relatively close, the public transport is efficient. The cultural events offered are impressive, there is always something going on for everybody. From music festivals to exhibitions, passing through installations, theatre, film festivals and so much more! I took Dutch courses at the INTT which offered a discounted fee for students. And outside the university I volunteered for some music festivals in the city.
I am applying for the Search year offered to graduate students from countries outside the EU. So I am looking for a job related to my Master’s degree. I would love to stay in Amsterdam as I believe this city has so much to offer me.’
