English language proficiency

General information

All applicants are required to submit a valid English test score which is not older than two years. We will start the selection procedure only if the English test score is included in your online application. Students are strongly encouraged to make early preparations for the test. Please refer to the contact details of test centres. If you're close to the deadline, please check the different tests and look for the first test date available. In case of insufficient scores applicants can do a resit as long as deadlines are respected.

Exemptions

The following applicants are exempted from the English test requirement:

1) Applicants that attended their high school or bachelor's in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom or the United States of America.

2) Applicants with a Dutch Bachelor's degree.

3) Applicants with an English proficiency test older than 2 years

  • if they have obtained a degree from an English-taught university programme completely taught in English
  • if they have attended an exchange programme of six months or more in an English-speaking country.

These applicants need to submit the old test score report and need to submit a proof of the language of instruction. If the language of instruction is not mentioned on the transcript or diploma, the student will need to submit a letter from their higher education institute, stating that the curriculum is completely taught in English. Applicants should upload this letter in the translation of transcript section.

TOEFL registration and reporting number
When registering online for the TOEFL test, please pay attention to the following: after filling in your personal details, you have to fill in the page "Select Score Recipients, Part 1 of 2". On this page, please search directly on "Recipient code" and fill in the Faculty of Economics and Business reporting number 0398. Then click "search". Your search results will be "Universiteit van Amsterdam". Continue to the following page: "Select Score Recipient, Part 2 of 2". When they ask for "department?", please click on "Graduate Schools". When they ask you to select the department group, please click on "Any department not listed".

! When asked for a reporting number, do not use any other number than 0398! Otherwise your test score will get lost as the University of Amsterdam is rather decentralised.
