Beryl ter Haar obtained a Bachelor's degree in music (oboe) at the conservatorium of Utrecht (LLB, June 1996). In 2000 she decided to change professions and started her studies in law at the University of Leiden. While she studied during evening hours she worked fulltime jobs during the daytime, first as junior advisor at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and during the last year of her study as legal secretary of labour law dispute settlement bodies at CAOP. In March 2005 she obtained her Master's degree in International and European Law at the University of Leiden with an historical law thesis on the development of a social Europe. From May 2006 to May 2011 Beryl worked as a PhD-candidate at the Leiden University’s Department of Social Law within the framework of the research programme Reforming Social Security – funded by Stichting Instituut GAK. In November 2012 Beryl successfully defended her dissertation on ‘The meaning of the open method of coordination for the development of a social Europe’.

As from January 2011 Beryl worked in several temporary jobs: at the University of Leiden, as legal assistant of the European Labour Law Network; and at the Universities of Utrecht and Hasselt as Assistant-Professor International and European Labour Law. Since May 2012 Beryl is a post-doc researcher on the legal status and effectiveness of international framework agreements at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS) and since December 2012 she combines this as Assistant-Professor International and European Labour Law and as Co-ordinator of the master programme International and European Labour Law at the University of Amsterdam.
