Tom de Boer (The Netherlands)

Public Internarional Law research master student 2010-2013

Tom de Boer, student research master Public International Law

'The research master Public International Law is obviously perfect for people with academic ambitions, but it is my experience that it can also be a thorough preparation for a life in law practice. The master’s curriculum is varied, but also offers the opportunity to specialize, and in any case leaves you with a deeper understanding of law than a regular LLM.

The research master incorporates the material knowledge of the regular PIL master supplemented with courses on research skills and methodology.  In addition, it offers the opportunity to participate in ongoing faculty research (Research Traineeship) and to write a review essay that might be published (Research Seminar, which also includes the writing of a PhD Proposal). I greatly valued the fact that you often work in small groups, and that there is regular contact with members of the faculty. It makes it all less anonymous than a ‘mass master’.

Furthermore, the opportunity to study abroad for one semester should be a reason to consider the master. I studied at the Law School of the University of Michigan, which was an experience that was really important for me, both personally and professionally.

I can only advise every student with a real interest in international law and no profound distaste of research to apply for this master. '
