Public international law has a long tradition but also an acute modern relevance. Its main functions are the facilitation of the co-existence of independent states and communities and the furtherance of international cooperation for shared interests. Both functions are of critical importance in an era of internationalisation and globalisation. The Public International Law curriculum provides students with a broad knowledge of general international law. Public international law encompasses a wide diversity of specialised fields. The wide variety of elective courses allows students to specialise in particular areas of public international law such as human rights law, humanitarian law/the law or armed conflict, international criminal law, international trade and investment law, and international environmental law.
The Public International Law track aims to advance research and writing skills and to involve students in the practical application of international law. This may be accomplished through enrolment in the Amsterdam International Law Clinic, the International Law in Domestic Courts project or one of the international moot court competitions in which the University participates.
