The Literacy Development and Education  degree programme is offered as a separate track of the Master’s programme in Educational Sciences  ('Onderwijskunde') at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), in collaboration with Leiden University (LEI) and the University of Utrecht (UU).

The goals of this Master’s programme are to provide students with the latest knowledge of the multiple domains of literacy, to teach students to analyse problems concerning literacy, to conduct research in the field of literacy and to make the research results available for educational and, more broadly, societal practice.

The programme is concerned with how education can affect the development of literacy in children and adults. Literacy is examined in a general sense, including not only reading and writing skills, but also mathematical skills, digital literacy and (other) domain-specific literacy skills.

Adequate levels of literacy can help children and adults to develop knowledge and skills, and to reach their individual potential. Literacy skills are believed to be indispensable for individuals to successfully participate in society, and for society at large, to enhance prosperity and economic development.

Degree certificate
