This study focuses on the Dutch war preparations before, during and directly after World War I. It shows how the Netherlands army reacted on the rapid innovations in warfare, not only related to weaponry but also to innovative scientific research and to war industry. These fundamental changes were difficult for a small power to implement and raised a crucial question how to keep armed neutrality credible, when military developments could not followed as quickly as the surrounding major powers.
