'Flexible Word Classes. Typological studies of underspecified parts of speech' is the first major cross-linguistic study of ‘flexible words’, i.e. words that cannot be classified in terms of the traditional lexical categories Verb, Noun, Adjective, or Adverb. Eva van Lier en Jan Rijkhoff are postdoc researchers in Linguistics.

Flexible words can serve in multiple functions, for which other languages employ members of two or more ‘specialised’ word classes. The current volume offers ten detailed studies on flexible word classes - including descriptive, comparative, and theoretical contributions - by authors with knowledge of such diverse languages as Kharia, Riau Indonesian, Santali, Sri Lanka Malay, Lushootseed, Gooniyandi, and Late Archaic Chinese.
