Samuel van Hoogstraten was more than a successful pupil of Rembrandt and a versatile painter. Through his experiments with optical illusions he sought contact with the science of his time. He also wrote some of the first Dutch novels and plays. He travelled to Rome, Vienna and London, and introduced the European court culture in the Netherlands. In this book several specialists examine Van Hoogstraten’s work, which demonstrates how in the Dutch Golden Age painting, literature and science were intertwined. By shedding a light on unknown artworks and creating new links between word and image, this book provides an contribution to our understanding of Van Hoogstraten’s ‘universal art’ in the context of early modern cultural history.
