Huub Dijstelbloem is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Politics at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) in The Hague. Bringing together the fields of philosophy of science and political philosophy his research employs a combination of conceptual, normative and empirical approaches. His research focuses on four themes:
1. The politics of border control, mobility mangement and surveillance policies.
2. The development of science systems and the role of science and technology in society.
3. Democratic theory, public administration and political pragmatism.
4. Biomedical issues and medical technologies.
Dijstelbloem has been affiliated to University of California San Diego (Oct-Dec. 2014) and the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Centre for Policy Analysis, Mozambique (May-Dec. 2010). He studied Philosophy (M.A.) and Science Dynamics (M.Sc.) in Amsterdam and Paris and obtained his Ph.D. at the UvA. Dijstelbloem is one of the initiators of Science in Transition, a movement that aims to reflect on the organization of quality assessment and social impact of the sciences and on science policy.
Dijstelbloem is member of the Scientific Council of the Flemish Peace Institute, a board member of the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC) and a member of the Advisory Board of the UvA's Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS). He was previously also a member of the editorial board of Krisis, an open access, peer-reviewed journal for current issues in philosophy.
He has worked as a Senior Researcher at the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) since 2009, and as a Lecturer in Philosophy of Science at the UvA since 2005. From 2006 to 2009, he worked as a Program Coordinator at the Rathenau Institute.
Dijstelbloem has edited a large number of books and authored many book chapters and articles on topics related to science, technology and democracy. In addition, he has contributed to many WRR reports and surveys.
Master Courses provided by him have paid attention to different topics and themes such as Philosophy of Science and Politics, Philosophy of Technology, Political Theory and Pragmatism, and Science and Technology Studies.
