Call for Papers Migrants’ Memory in the Digital Age

The increased migration and the convergent media environment that has compressed space and time call for studies of immigrants’ new practices and a critical inquiry of migrants’ relations to social media. Thus, we call for papers that critically explore the main themes and ideas in the field of memory and migration research with a special attention being paid to the utilization by migrants of new social media in their memory work.
Possible topics are:
- the significance of digital sources in preserving migrants’ memory and construction of migrants’ identities and belongings.
- the role of digital sources in construction of diasporic and transnational communities.
- the theory and methodology of studying transnational memory in the context of the development of new means of communication
- the role of new media and the understanding of uses of media by different migrants’ generations.
- from script to screen: migrants’ new media practices and the production of locality
- migrants’ digital experiences and digital technology as a means of communication, a provider of security, and political mobilization
The length of the presented papers should be approx. 20 min. A selection of the papers presented will be invited for publication in the ISTME working papers series (on-line). We encourage contributions on theoretical, empirical and methodological issues. Studies involving longitudinal and/or comparative analyses and contributions focusing on the European context are particularly welcome.
The deadline for submission of abstracts (150-200 words) is 15 May 2014. Notice of acceptance will be communicated by 15 June 2014.
