In the seventeenth century, the lute was the universal musical instrument, comparable with the piano in the nineteenth century. There existed a rich repertoire of music for lute solo, and the instrument was used widely for the accompaniment of singers and in ensemble playing. In this monograph, all aspects of the lute in the seventeenth century Netherlands are treated: its famous and obscure players, its music as transmitted in prints and manuscripts, the instrument makers, Constantijn Huygens as a gentleman-lutenist, and the role of the lute in contemporary literature and painting.
