Professional Bio
Michael S. Merry is professor of philosophy in the department of Child Development and Education. He also is an associate member both of the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
He received a broad education in the humanities in Chicago, Leuven and New York before earning his doctorate in philosophy and educational policy studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Situated within the domains of ethics and political philosophy, he writes on a variety of topics within the field of education (broadly understood), though many of his interests intersect with other disciplinary fields such as political science, urban sociology and human geography. Thematically, he specializes in three distinct yet overlapping areas of study. These are: spatial concentration and school segregation; immigration, migration and minority status; and stigma, prejudice and the particularities of identity. His teaching and writing often examine and defend alternative resistance strategies to institutionalized racism and oppression that aim to strengthen the self-determination of stigmatized and disadvantaged minority individuals and communities. Other foci of his teaching and writing include: ethical tensions that occur between freedom and equality; paternalism and the ethics of intervention; the epistemology of education research; and the ethical conflicts that arise between the state, parents and children.
