I am a PhD candidate at the Netherlands China Law Centre. My research project aims to understand how and why food safety crisis shape law and law enforcement in China.

At the moment China is plagued by incidents involving unsafe food. In such episodes or crises, there are often calls for stricter laws, tougher sanctions, more inspections, among other things. In my interdisciplinary research project I aim to find out how and why food crises in China lead to change in law and law enforcement and what the implications of such crisis-induced legal change are.

To this end, I have selected half a dozen of crisis surrounding the production and consumption of animal-based food. For each of these cases I first reconstruct the process from event to crisis. Along the way, I identify what has changed in law and law enforcement as a result of that crisis. I then analyze what this means for the nature, quality, and process of law and law enforcement.

I am based at the Netherlands China Law Centre. My supervisors are dr. Benjamin van Rooij en dr. Jan Popma. I am also a fellow at the Long US-China Institute for Business and Law, University of California, Irvine.
