In 2010, I received a VIDI grant from NWO to establish a new research team to develop global economic instruments to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services. The research team pursues the following three key objectives:
- development of an indicator for biodiversity as a leverage point for global economic instruments (PhD-project, ecology);
- development of economic instruments for protecting global biodiversity (PhD-project, economics);
- development of moral principles for international allocation of responsibilities (burden-sharing) to protect global biodiversity.
This project is unique in at least two ways. First, it explicitly investigates the ideal long-term situation at a global level, and second, it takes a truly interdisciplinary approach integrating ecology, economics and moral philosophy.
VIDI grants are part of the Innovational Research Incentives Schemes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and are targeted at excellent researchers who want to develop their own innovative line of research and appoint one or more researchers. Applicants must have completed their doctorates and should already spent some years conducting post-doctoral research. The maximum amount of the grant is € 800,000 for a period of five years.
