Informatie
I am professor in "Experimental Plant Systematics" at the Institute for
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics. See the group's webpages for more detail.
From 2005 to 2014 I was also the director of IBED.
October 1, 2014 I became Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam.
Furthermore, I am the project leader for the Netherlands of the European LifeWatch infrastructure.
Research Interests
The group Experimental Plant Systematics studies the origin and maintenance of genetic variation in plants, its relationship with the plant's breeding system, and its role in the process of adaptation
There are four main research lines
- Breeding system and metapopulation dynamics of crucifer species (Arabidopsis, Rorippa)
- Biosystematics, Evolution and Phylogeny of Polyploid complexes (Rorippa, Draba, Arabidopsis and other crucifers)
- Plant Conservation Biology (Gentiana, Gentianella, Arnica, other endangered species)
- Crop/Wild relative complexes and GMO Risk Assessment (Lactuca, Cichorium)
My own interests focus on adaptation and differentiation in higher plant species, in relation to their breeding system. Study objects are species of the genus Rorippa (Yellow Cress), as well as other members of the family Brassicaceae (crucifers), including Arabidopsis thaliana, and different Draba species.
The genus Rorippa
Rorippa is the genus that is being studied more intensively: it is interesting because it contains selfing and outcrossing species, perennials and annuals, clonal and non(/less)-clonal species, and because they occupy different niches. Moreover, hybrids are reported from many areas, which allows us to study both the importance of hybridization in nature as well as the genetic basis of species differentiation.
Teaching
I am involved in the following courses and other teaching activities:
Bachelor programme Biology
- Plant Biology
- Bachelor thesis supervision
Bachelor programme Future Planet Studies
- Future of the Earth
- Food
Master programme in Ecology and Evolution
- Incidental teaching in courses
- Supervision of thesis projects of master students
Software
The programs GenoType and GenoDive for the analysis of
clonal diversity in asexual species were developed by Patrick
Meirmans, during his PhD Research
on Asexuality in Taraxacum.
A paper describing the program with the title is published in
Molecular Ecology Notes.
"GENOTYPE and GENODIVE: two programs for the analysis of
genetic diversity of asexual organisms" by Patrick G. Meirmans
and Peter H. van Tienderen
The most recent version of the software can be downloaded
