The Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG). Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) is responsible for research in the social sciences. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences.

Research and teaching in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies is organised in four thematic program groups: Governance and Inclusive Development (GID), Geographies of Globalisations (GOG), Urban Geographies (UG) and Urban Planning (UP). 

The Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, programme group Urban Planning, has a vacant position for one assistant professor. The new assistant professor is currently expected to spend 60 percent of the time on teaching and 40 percent on research. Both activities include administrative tasks. In exceptional cases (e.g. following a major research grant acquisition) the percentage of research time can be extended.

The new assistant professor is expected to contribute to the research programme of Urban Planning and to teach in the Department’s bachelor, master programme  Urban and Regional Planning and research master programmes Urban Studies and International Development Studies.

Job description

In the post-crisis era, new insights are needed on the development and transformation of the built environment. The substance matter of the vacancy focuses on the operational aspects of the built environment, in particular on the legal and financial aspects of real estate development and transformation. The candidate is expected to conduct innovative research in this field and to take an interdisciplinary and international research focus.

The candidate will teach, among others, one module in the Dutch-taught bachelor programme about the legal and financial aspects of development and transformation of the built environment in The Netherlands. A good knowledge of the specific market and legal conditions of the Dutch context will therefore be required. In the specialised and English-taught master programme, the candidate will teach on the development and transformation of real estate in international perspective and will also undertake the supervision of master theses.

The candidate will sustain networks with the professional field and will do acquisition for external funding for research. The candidate will provide a contribution to the development of urban planning through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks and through valorisation of research in society.

Requirements

The candidate:

  • has completed a doctoral thesis in urban planning, law, public administration, economics, geography or a related field in the social sciences;
  • has demonstrated affinity and expertise with regards to the legal and financial aspects of real estate development and transformation;
  • has proven capability to teach and motivate students at both undergraduate and graduate level;
  • should have the Basic Teaching Qualification (Dutch BKO or foreign equivalent) or should be willing to obtain this certificate within two years;
  • has proven capability to work as a 'team player';
  • has a promising scientific publication record with evidence of the aimed at specialisation;
  • has commitment to the research agenda of the AISSR programme group Urban Planning;
  • has demonstrated ability or potential to acquire research funding from external sources (e.g. Netherlands’ Organisation for Scientific Research or other research councils, European Union, or other national and international funding agencies);
  • has knowledge of, experience with, and interest in both quantitative and qualitative research methods;
  • should be fluent in English and Dutch, or should be willing to acquire good active and passive knowledge of the Dutch language within two years.

The full-time appointment (38 hrs / week) will initially be on a temporary basis for a period of three years, with the opportunity for tenure.
