I am geologist/paleoecologist and associate researcher at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). I am also a Board Member at Ikiam (Universidad regional Amazonica, Ecuador). In 1988 and 1994 respectively I obtained my MSc and PhD at the University of Amsterdam. Later I extended my academic degrees with an MSc in Science Communication from Imperial College London (UK).

My long-term research interest is the natural history of the Amazon region and its seaward extension, the Amazon Fan. In my research I have mostly focused on western Amazonia (Colombia, Peru, Brazil) and my most substantial scientific contributions were to identify the crucial role of Andean uplift on the evolution of Amazonia during the Cenozoic and to recognize the Neogene marine incursions into this region.

In recent years my work has concentrated on interdisciplinary cooperation and data integration. This is best exemplified in a Science paper published in 2010 where the links between biodiversity patterns and mountain uplift are explained. Other examples of my multidisciplinary work are the book “Amazonia, Landscape and Species Evolution”, published in 2010 by Wiley, and “Mountains, Climate and Biodiversity”, a book project of which I am also chief editor and which will be published in February 2018.

Between 2011 and 2015 I coordinated a research project in the framework of Climamazon, a European - Brazilian research programme that investigated Amazon drainage basin. My role was to coordinate the study on the onset and stages of the Amazon River and its arrival in the western Atlantic. Other research that I am involved in is centered on the integration of palynological and geological data with molecular phylogenies. My further focus, beside Amazonia, is on the natural history of Tibet, the Himalayan region and Myanmar.

Currently I participate as senior scientist in the EU research project entitled MAGIC [http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/197271_en.html].  I am also board member of the Treub Foundation (a funding agency) and the Palynological Society of the Netherlands. Furthermore, on the 22nd of March I was appointed by presidential decree of Rafael Correa Delgado as board member of the Ikiam University in Tena, Ecuador.

In the past I worked as lecturer at the Sultan Qaboos University (Oman) and Delft Technical University (The Netherlands), and I was research associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (UK). During my time at the Omani and Dutch universities I supervised students at post-doc, PhD, MSc and BSc levels. Furthermore, I have worked as technical writer for External Communications at Shell International Exploration and Production (The Netherlands).
