Biography

After working as a researcher for the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands (Huygens ING) and the Radboud University Nijmegen, I currently lecture in Modern European History at the European Studies department.

From 2018 onwards, I will also hold a postdoctoral fellowship at the Saxo Institute at the University of Copenhagen, where I will be part of a collaborative research project on the foundations of international law.

Teaching

I teach courses on modern European history and European integration at the BA and MA level and coordinate the practice-oriented ‘Country Profiling’ course for the MA in European Policy.

I also supervise Ba and MA theses on varying topics, including the history of a human rights organisation, the Europeanization of local governance and the role of the press in the British debates on EU membership.

Research

The focus of my research is the development of constitutional, European and international law from a political / intellectual perspective. Stirred by my PhD project on the history of Dutch constitutional debate and constitutional change between 1945 and 1983 (finished in 2013), I am interested in the interactions between (ideas about) law and political decision-making, and how these interactions shaped contemporary Europe. The history of European integration, as well as the 20 century history of the Netherlands have my special interest, as well as projects featuring an interdisciplinary approach and/or archival research.

I am currently working on a number of projects, including:

- completing a number of articles and a monograph on the interaction of Dutch politics, courts and legal academics with European (EU) law between 1950 and 1992. This research is part of the collaborative research project 'Towards a new history of European law'  at the University of Copenhagen.

- a source edition on the history of Dutch constitutional committees in the period 1883-1983, for the Huygens Institute of the history of the Netherlands.

- the History of the European Commission 3 (1986-2000), for which I write a small chapter about the history of the Commission’s Legal Service.

- the English and German translations of the textbook Europa in alle staten, co-authored with Wim van Meurs, Robin de Bruin, Liesbeth van de Grift, Carla Hoetink and Carlos Reijnen (2013), to use in teaching European integration history. The updated translations, The unfinished history of European integration resp. Die Unvollendete - eine Geschichte der europäischen Integration will be published by Amsterdam University Press resp. Dietz Verlag / Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung in 2018.
