Short biography

Erik Manders studied in experimental physics (University of Amsterdam) and did a PhD at the University of Amsterdam (1994) in development of multi-color confocal microscopy in the Brakenhoff-lab. During post-doc positions in Stockholm and Oxford he focused on building new microscopes and 3D-imaging of living cells. Back in Amsterdam, he patented his invention "Controlled Light Exposure Microscopy" (CLEM) and further developed this technology with Dr. Ron Hoebe from the Academic Medical Centre (Amsterdam).

At the moment he is associate professor  at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciencea (University of Amsterdam) where he is working on his new invention, Re-scan Confocal Microscopy (RCM) and its applications in cell biology. Re-scan Confocal Microscopy (RCM) is a new super-resolution technique that provides improved resolution and strongly improved optical sensitivity.  This new super-resolution microscope is based on extremely simple technology and is typically useful for biological applications where the combination of high resolution and high sensitivity is required. The RCM microscope is now being used by microbiologists, neurobiologists and plant scientists within the Swammerdam Institute and by researchers all over the world. 

Since 2012 he is leading the "Nikon Centre of Excellence on Super-Resolution Microscopy"; a collaboration between Nikon Instruments Europe BV and the University of Amsterdam where super-resolution microscopy technology is developed and applied in life sciences. 

Together with Peter Drent, he founded in February 2016 a spin-off company "" to bring the RCM technology to the market. As part-time scientific director of he is responsible for product development within the company. is now a fast growing company, selling RCM units all over the world.
