Professor Stanley Brul

Head Molecular Biology

' If you are interested in what drives health and disease, the Amsterdam Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences is for you. Unravelling the molecular basis of diseases by looking into the living cell is something the research groups at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences do as very few others can.

Recent publications in Nature, Science and other top rank journals show how state of the art microscopy and newly selected fluorescent proteins are being developed and applied at the UvA’s Faculty of Science. This makes it possible to cover the ’holy grail’ of modern cell biology; to be able look in time and space at living cells and whole organs to study the behaviour of molecules and their role in physiology.

These technical innovations are used at the University’s Academic Medical Centre (AMC), the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and the Sanquin laboratories, institutions where immunology research and its application are core activities. You will address challenges in, amongst others, cancer research, medical biochemistry, immunology, infectious diseases, endocrinology and cardiovascular health and disease.
All studies are supported by excellent 'omics' capabilities, allowing full genome sequencing of biological specimens. Proteomics and metabolomics at the AMC and the Science Faculty are coupled to well defined growth systems. This allows detailed time-resolved analysis of metabolism in cells.

Our goal is the understanding of health and prevention of disease - from disease to molecule. This will be the challenge you face. And we are looking forward to welcoming you in our midst.'
