Werken bij de UvA
University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a university with an internationally acclaimed profile, located at the heart of the Dutch capital. As well as a world centre for business and research, Amsterdam is a hub of cultural and media activities. The UvA is a member of the League of European Research Universities. The Faculty of Science at the UvA is one of Europe's foremost institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff members spread over four departments and ten research institutes. Each institute has its own research program, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.
In 2010, the Faculty will relocate to the Science Park Amsterdam. Ambitious building projects are paving the way for this relocation. The move will make the Park one of the largest centers of academic research in the Netherlands.
Postdoc 'Large Scale Distributed Multiscale Biomedical Computing'
full-time
vacancy number 09-1048
MeDDiCa is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network sponsored by the European Commission. This network consists of 16 partners from all over Europe. MeDDiCA (Medical Devices Design in Cardiovascular Applications) will investigate, through modelling and simulation, percutaneous stent devices and artificial heart valves. Both the validation of the in-silico models and their use for better understanding of physiological response to such devices as well as their improved design are central to the project. The research is multidisciplinary, ranging from medicine and biology to physics, engineering and computational science. Researchers on the project are expected to collaborate intensively across their own knowledge boundaries.
The research at the University of Amsterdam will be focussed on multiscale modelling and simulation, as well as large scale distributed multiscale computing, and will be embedded in the Computational Science group of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam.
Tasks
- Establishing a distributed multiscale simulation environment on large scale European e-Infrastructures (DEISA, EGI), based on previously developed libraries
- Porting a prototypical three dimensional simulation for in-stent restenosis to this environment
- Enhancing the model with more advanced single scale models
- In collaboration with other researchers in the MeDDiCa project, execute 3D simulations
- Extend the distributed multiscale simulation environment to other multiscale simulations within the MeDDiCa project
Requirements
The candidates should have a PhD degree in Computational Science, Computational Physics, Computational Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines. The applicants should have a strong track record in large scale computing. Direct experience with Grid computing is not required, but candidates should have a strong affinity with such modes of distributed computing. Moreover, experience in the biomedical field is not immediately required, but again, a strong interest is clearly required. Finally, candidates should be able to work in an international multidisciplinary team. Moreover, given the nature of the MeDDiCa project, candidates should be willing to participate in all projects related networking activities. Applicants are kindly requested to motivate why they have chosen to apply for this specific position.
As this research is sponsored under the Marie Curie initiative, the Marie Curie mobility rules apply. So, before applying, candidates are requested to check their eligibility. Details can be found on the MeDDiCa website.
Appointment
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of two years. The salary is in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2.379 before tax, up to a maximum of €3.755 per month (scale 10). The Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities is applicable. There are also secondary allowances that will be paid in accordance with the rules for Marie Curie Initial Training Networks.
Job application
Applications including a detailed curriculum vitae and a motivation letter, marked "strictly confidential" and quoting job reference number 09-1048 in the upper left-hand corner of the envelope, should be sent to: Universiteit van Amsterdam, Faculty of Science, Personnel Department, attn: C. Knaap-Cabi, POSTBUS 94216, 1090 GE Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Applications can also be e-mailed to application-science@uva.nl. Please quote the job reference code.
