Het fellowship wordt toegekend vanuit de Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, die onderdeel zijn van het onderzoeks- en innovatieprogramma Horizon 2020 van de Europese Unie. Doel van de subsidie is het bevorderen van de mobiliteit van veelbelovende, ervaren onderzoekers over de landsgrenzen binnen en buiten de Europese Unie. Het fellowship is persoonsgebonden.

Er zijn twee typen Individual Fellowships: European Fellowships en Global Fellowships. Zes UvA-onderzoekers ontvangen een Global Fellowship. Zij gaan eerst twee jaar naar een universiteit buiten de Europese Unie en komen daarna een jaar terug bij de UvA. Zeven onderzoekers krijgen een European Fellowship om onderzoek aan de UvA te doen; dit type fellowship duurt twee jaar.
