These cover the 2019 calendar year and have been sourced from the Institutional Research unit and the UvA Fact Book. Where we refer to ‘male’ and ‘female’ in the text below, we mean those who identified themselves as either male or female when joining as a member of staff or enrolling as a student.
Students
- 35,000 students
- 5,500 international students
Of all students, 57% are female and 43% male.
76% of all students have Dutch nationality, 19% a Western nationality and 5% a non-Western nationality.
Staff
Of all 6,000 staff, 50% are male and 50% female.
79% of all staff have Dutch nationality, 16% a Western nationality and 6% a non-Western nationality.
Professors
Of all professors, 76% are male and 24% female. As of 2019, we aim to have 50% of all vacant professorships filled by women. Each faculty must include their strategy for achieving this in their Strategic Personnel Plan, and in the event a man is selected, they must specify how extensively female candidates were sought (source: Diversity Policy Document).
