Ethics, responsibility and sustainability have been core areas for the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) since its creation in the early 2000s. Ethics is the systematic study of our ability to distinguish between right and wrong. We use it as a foundation to explore the responsibilities that businesses and other organisations have towards their stakeholders and, more broadly, society. We see that these business operations should aim to build a more sustainable future and operate within the environmental boundaries of our planet.
Ethics, Responsibility & Sustainability
  • Background of Ethics, Responsibility & Sustainability

At the Amsterdam Business School, we relate to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) as a guide to incorporate ethics, responsibility and sustainability into teaching, research, engagement, and operations. We also relate to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The SDGs address the interconnected global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, sustainable consumption and production, peace, justice and strong institutions.

  • Research

All sections within the Amsterdam Business School pay attention to topics related to ethics, responsibility and sustainability, fine-tuned and specific to their area of expertise. Examples of the broad range of topics explored at ABS include ethical leadership, moral behaviour, ethics and technology, corporate governance, stakeholder management, sustainable innovation, responsible marketing, social and environmental accounting, renewable energy, international corporate responsibility, and business and peace.

    Our contributions

Many high-profile faculty in this focal area have worked at ABS. This is evidenced by many publications and notable outreach. In addition to disciplinary approaches, there are also many interdisciplinary research projects and publications.
