Infant mortality in Africa has decreased significantly, but is still twenty times higher than in Europe. Improving both the quality and quantity of paediatric research on the spot, as well as the paediatric knowledge of Dutch non-governmental organisations, could possibly contribute to better health care and indirectly to a reduction in deaths. This will be the central premise of Michaël Boele van Hensbroek in his inaugural lecture as professor by special appointment of Global Child Health.
